Chapter 27
Roddick didnât know what to expect when he first walked into his office. It had been six months since he woke from the dead. Progress was slow. At first, he could hardly speak or move, which had frustrated him because in his head he could do all those things.
The neurologist had told him it looked like all the damage was localized and that he needed to create new pathways to bypass the impaired area. Thatâs what the therapists had tried to do, though at the time he didnât realize it. Playing with play dough while constantly being asked what day it was and who the President of the United States was annoyed him.
It seemed heʼd hit a wall as far as progress after the first month. The fear that he would never recover enough to be a fully functional human being briefly came over him. Thatâs when he gave therapy his all, and things picked up.
He managed to stay up longer and put sentences together that didnât sound like gobbledygook to everyone else. He even got to where he could walk long periods without a walker. This allowed him to be discharged. Kaylee stayed with him at the house and took him to his therapy sessions between classes. Eventually, he was able to use public transportation to therapy.
Detective Chase would come by sporadically, asking about what he remembered. He told him it was the same as the last time he asked. That he went to Valentas and made it look like he had damaging information and thatâs why he was targeted.
He had planned on ambushing the mysterious killer at the house, and taking him in but it all went to hell. His explanation never seemed to satisfy Chase and he always asked if Roddick could remember more. But there wasnât anything more to remember.
Progress continued to where one would never know he had suffered any type of brain trauma. But to people that knew Roddick, he had changed. He wasnât able to focus for as long as he used to. Nor could he sit through an entire period of hockey before getting bored. This seemed to upset Kaylee, but Shaun and Toney, who would come by, shrugged it off.
Roddick would often leave them to finish the game as he went out for walks to regain his focus. Often heâd go out for hours and when he returned he saw Kaylee had worried heâd gotten lost. Now he kept to shorter walks. Still, he couldnât just walk around all day. He needed to get back to work.
Though his insurance had paid for most of his substantial medical fees, he had dipped into a chunk he had salted away for retirement.
A year earlier, on the suggestion of a client in the banking industry, Roddick had gotten certified as a notary public. It turned out to be fast and easy side money, signing documents and handing them over to the bank. And thatâs what he planned on doing his first few days. Ease back into things.
